A SELECTION OF PLACES TO VISIT

BIARRITZ and the Atlantic coast; a very chic resort, with lots of smart shops, restaurants etc, and famous, like much of this area, for its wind-surfing; the world championships are regularly held here.

LOURDES; world-famous Christian pilgrimage site, which attracts 5 million pilgrims and tourists each year www.Lourdes-france.org

PAU; a very attractive town, ‘discovered' by the English during the Peninsular War at the beginning of the 19th century. It soon became very popular and fashionable and as a result the first golf club in Europe was built here. However, Pau has a long and distinguished history apart from this; there is a magnificent chateau, where King Henry IV was born in 1553, a pretty ‘old town', and a vibrant modern district with a wide range of shops, restaurants etc. There is also an interesting museum de Beaux Arts.www.pau-pyrenees.com

PYRENEES; walking, fishing, white-water rafting and paragliding in summer, and skiing in winter, or just enjoy the fantastic scenery. Take a cable-car from La Mongie up to the top of the Pic du Midi (2,900 m), where there is an observatory, astronomy museum and restaurant www.picdumidi.com

TOULOUSE; one of the biggest cities in France, with masses to see and do, but of special interest is the Cite de l'Espace, a space theme park, where you can visit full-scale models of Ariane 5, the Mir space station and the Soyuz modules, the IMAX theatre and Planetarium www.cite-espace.com
